Therefore let us closely examine the options available to those who having put their hand to the plow and looking back, are found unfit for the kingdom of God. We are set by our confession in the last section to look to the implication of Hebrews chapter six in light of our current endeavor. Which scripture says it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the world to come, and who have fallen away; it is impossible, I say, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify the Son of God afresh to themselves and put Him to an open shame.
Several steps must be taken to rightly assemble the pillars of these truths upon the unfailing foundation of God’s inerrant word. Firstly it is decreed that there is no plan B, no second option, no other way to see this than is postulated through God’s eyes. Hence it is impossible to be otherwise minded. The first condition is that these souls must have been enlightened, believers if you will. They must have tasted, consumed, enjoyed, even partaken of the heavenly gift. Not the gift of prophecy or giving or teaching or tongues or any other manifestation of the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit of Jehovah God but rather THE gift sent down from on high, the gift of Salvation. These referred to here are saved believers who have certainly received those afore mentioned evidences as God so desired. And he says that any of these who have fallen away cannot be any means undo their evil position and be restored to purity with Christ. IMPOSSIBLE, means NO WAY!
What is impossible? It is impossible (not doable) for them to be brought to a place of repentance satisfactory to the demand of a Holy God. Plain English: If they lost what God says they cannot lose, they cannot regain it and be saved again. In discussions with my friends who believe some folks lose their salvation and repent later and get it back again, I hand them the Bible open to this verse and invite them to tear out the passage that declares their position is faulty. Either you are saved eternally or you put Christ to an open shame demanding a better blood sacrifice the next time around.
The implication to our past sections may not yet be obvious to all. The reason it is impossible is because the blood sacrifice of Jesus the Christ is sufficient. “It is finished” He said. No more is necessary. Nothing else needs to be washed, cleansed, restored, forgiven or set right. God has finished His plan. If (big if for a lot of folks claiming to be born again saints of God), if you are saved then you are restored to the relationship He planned from the beginning. You do not have to choose to sin. We discussed this in the last section.
So why then does the battle rage? Ignorance, the enemy, and the flesh. It really is that simple. In ignorance we do not operate in the full control of the Holy Spirit according to the instructions in the Bible which we are too selfishly lazy to read and apply to our heart. Many times we use them to manipulate our circumstances and put us on the throne in other folks eyes. God’s enemy is defeated and is going into the pit kicking, clawing, spitting and screaming but He is still going. The soul of the believer is regenerated, that means made new. The Flesh did not get saved. It has to be brought under subjection daily. Therein lie the consequences of the choices we choose.
Have you ever wondered what would have been the result if the fruit was not eaten in Eden? Or if Achan had just let it lie or if David had not looked “again”. Or what if Judas didn’t care for the money or Annanias lie to the Holy Spirit, or if you had simply chose not to sin? And yet that was then and this is now and What is Next is coming. From God’s perspective there is nothing else He needs to do. You are fit for the kingdom of Heaven and do not have to earn your way in. So it is not about what you do or don’t do. That just gives the evidences of the truth you have believed or rejected. You cannot lose it and get it back. If you imagine that someone losing their salvation could be true you probably base it on what you have seen in the lives of others and not in the Word of God. If you believe what your eyes tell you then leprechauns make chocolate cookies and chipmunks sing.
Last thought before we move on; Why does God allow… whatever? Maybe because He is God. You get to choose, He knows your choice before you choose it. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows, that he also will reap. There is within the power of every person the ability to do other than God knows they will do, but they won’t. He is God. Choose to be in a right relationship with Him.
