My Birthday

I’ve had another birthday
They come round once a year
And this has been a tough one
By the looks of it, I fear
Still I’m glad to have had it
I greet each one with cheer
Like the friends who remind me
I’m getting older every year.

And that’s how it’s supposed to be
Or so it’s whispered in my ear
The aches and pains I tend to gain
Are reminders hoping to smear
Any thoughts of youthfulness
Which might try to reappear
As I give thought to retiring soon
As a beach bum or a mountaineer.

There I could relax for a while
Before I seek to volunteer
For I suspect that in this life
I’m destined for more than one career
And while there are many souls
Trying to succeed and persevere
They seem to be getting there
Without a proper steering gear.

So I guess I’ll lend a helpful hand
While I’m relaxed and cavalier
For surely some have never heard
Of the hope I love and revere
Many find good goals to follow
And fair causes to which they adhere
But Jesus Christ God’s Messiah
Is the truth which is so clear.

In the Bible it is written
The path which we must steer
Is not assigned a lowly value
By a pawn shop auctioneer
For though some days the way
Seems lonely or austere
Jesus is the owner of it
Not some cheap marketeer.

So tell me friend from afar
Is He the same in China or Zaire
I hope to travel far and wide
To learn if He is that dear
To those who live in other lands
As we who see Mount Rainier
And would they think the sight
Of suits to be quite queer.

But I’ve embarked upon a quest
Where others need not interfere
I’ll travel by the way of boat
Or perhaps a bicycle gear
All the while this birthday is past
And naysayers are so insincere
I seek to know and spread the love
Of Him who alone is premiere.

An Octet is a group of eight
Eight times for the engineer
It is the proof shown to us
That Jesus is no racketeer
He has a plan to love and save
Each one who will draw near
For to this end in His great plan
You have been placed on this sphere.
