Fellowship Of Midnight Oil

When I was a younger man, Hanging with God’s Holy clan,
Midnight oil flowed from His hands

The touch of the Spirit’s love, Washed each heart from above,
As we sought to wear Him like a glove

First we’d meet at the Church, Purposed in God’s Word to search,
Like wise old owls on their perch

When the Spirit’s working was done, Through time spent praising the Son,
We’d head out for some late night fun

Put the pot of coffee on; Find something tasty with pecan,
Open up the Word to feast thereon

Won’t go home till we have sight, Of the clock passing through midnight,
Knowing the time we spend here is right

This fellowship of midnight oil, Wrought in us by spiritual toil,
Was rewarded with much Heavenly spoil

Now some of us have grayer hair, And the time that we spent there,
Was blessed by God’s Spirit so fair

And if in His gracious plan, We’re allowed once more to stand,
Late at night in this Holy band

We’ll sing His praises and do more, For we’re called by the One we adore,
To seek the wisdom we pray for

But make mine a decaf brew, And a diet biscuit or two,
Is ten late enough for this crew?

So long before you need that bed, Tell me what Jesus has said,
As He speaks through these words in red

Still midnight will come again, And late night victories over sin,
Just like it has always been

By God’s grace we are blessed, In our memories to caress
Simpler days of joy with less stress

Yet the Lord who met us then, Will answer prayers to enter in
This fellowship of midnight oil again
