Important Christmas Gifts

It was important enough to search every store.
No care was given for the price tag it bore.
Oh, to see the look in their eyes made your heart soar.
As they tore off the wrappings from the night before.

Then set it aside as the next gift was opened that morn,
The day we claim as special because He was born.
We had our candlelight service with Gabriel’s horn,
And sang of His night before the trees we adorn.

That was a year ago and once again here we are.
And in the corner, the gift which set last year’s bar.
Still in the box, never used and not very far,
From where it was unwrapped beneath last year’s star.

It didn’t really matter although it was the best,
For the things we desire most are usually just a test.
The power of Christmas is not in getting the same as the rest.
It’s in knowing Jesus that makes your heart blessed.

What if we had a Christmas with no gifts?
What if our family gatherings knew no rifts?
And what if our hearts could avoid Satan’s sifts?
What would be left on our “must have” Christmas lists?

Take away all the store sales, the trees and the lights,.
Find yourself left with only Jesus in those nights
Does not His story give your heart glorious flights,
With visions of Angels bursting as heavenly sights?

Would we be able to rejoice that we bring,
Only songs from our lips for His glory to sing?
And though we’ve no bells to make loudly ring,
Could we still crown this babe as our King?

The question we ask is not what is desired,
But rather by which is your soul fired.
Is it the things in which our lusts are mired,
Or is Jesus Christ alone that which is required?
