Stones & Ripples

There were smooth flat ones, rounded ones and jagged edged ones. They came in every size from pebbles to rocks and almost boulders. Yet with the same fluid effortless motion, He gathered each one, aimed it well and cast it far into the water. With a resounding plunk-ker-thunk, the largest pushed aside mountains of the cool liquid and sent large waves cascading away from the impact point. Every one making the impact it was intended to do. Even the smaller ones were purposed and planned to fall where they did from these strong hands. The tiniest pebbles could also be seen hitting the water by the small gentle ripples which radiated out from where they entered.

Continually, stone upon stone, rock after rock, He cast each one out. Some landed far away, others much closer and still others finding the water’s surface several times as they skipped quickly into the distance. Larger ones with bigger impact zones appeared to cover the ripples of the much smaller pebbles. Yet after the large waves rolled past, there was still the small undulating ripple of the first stone working its way out from its impact point. Then another fell and another and on it went. Never tiring, never ceasing, just choosing well and casting purposefully with flawless aim.

As each stone was cast, a name was called out. Whizzing through the air, “Betty”, splash. Whiz, “Paul”, splash; “Bill”, splash, “Steve”, splash, “Sally”, ker-plunk, “Carol”, splash… And behind each splash came ripples. There were big ripples then little ripples with every size in between.  Without any seeming orchestration, all bouncing off one another, passing through each other and affecting each other. Bigger ripples absorbing littler ones. Several ripples going the same direction caught one another combining into a more effective wave. Still the names came with every stone, every splash, every ripple; “Sarah”, “James”, “Elizabeth”, “John”, “Seth”, “Mary”, “Michael”, “Sue”, “Donna”, “David”. Not one stone hit aimlessly. Each ripple was purposed to roll where it did and accomplished its goal. Skip, skip, skip, skip, splash, in perfect harmony.

Someone walking by asked “Are you trying to build something in the water with all those rocks?” Whiz, “Sam” splash; “Nancy”, “Yep, I suppose I Am”. Splash, “Andrew”, splash, “Tina”, splash “Rick”, plunk-ker-thunk.

Trying to make sense of the chaos he was witnessing, the passerby said, “Looking at it up close like this, it seems to be quite a mess.”

Ripples crashing into ripples and waves covering waves. Stone upon stone and rock upon rock, on and on it went. As the pile of stones diminished it grew, miraculously replenished from within. Every time there was a need, a stone was cast into just the right spot. Every time a ripple subsided, another was moving across the water to take its place.

In that very way God the Father in heaven puts each one of His children into the place of His choosing to do His will. Each of us is that stone He has named. Each of us is taken in His loving hand and guided through a life of joy and prosperity, tragedy and poverty according to His good pleasure. Each of us makes the skip or splash or ker-plunk as He has gifted us so that His plan might be completed.

“Yeah, you are right” said the stone thrower. “Up close this looks like a mess, but from my house it looks like a masterpiece. And I’m almost finished.” Turning to the side and looking up, He said “Son, are you about ready to go get our children?”
