Heroes in my place

I heard an angry soul who wished I were dead
In his prayers he asked for strangers to die
Then a brave soldier stood up in my stead
Taking the bullet meant for me, as I weep and cry
Now I see a hero. His family’s eyes sad and red
Surely in their hearts their prayers are asking why
I too wonder at hatred’s price kneeling by my bed
Dear Lord “Why must so many believe the lie;
That says we are their enemy, the bringer of their dread”
My hero has ensured that our flag will still fly
Not above their sharp salute, for they have gone ahead
As we mourn gratefully and sing our soft goodbye
