I Watched the Fireflies

I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of you
I remember you holding your jar following wherever they flew
You ran to where they had glowed and stopped when the light faded
Then charged ahead as they lit up again to the next place they paraded
You never gave up but excitedly ran from each old spark to the new
I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of you.

I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of your joy
How you encountered each creation of God as His gift and not a toy
Amazed you let your fingers be the road on which their tiny legs ran
Then you shouted with glee as their wings lifted them according to His plan
With sparkling eyes as bright as their glow you gave each firefly their due
I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of you.

I watched the fire flies tonight, they reminded me so much of you
You asked with honest open hearts “will they be here next year too?”
Not just these but so many more will make their flight each year
Yet your smiles and giggles of delight are what I hold most dear
I wish tonight you had seen them sparkle against a sky of dark blue
I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of you.

I watched the fireflies tonight, they reminded me so much of you
Of how your heart seeks know the promises God says are true
I thought of how you are blessed by His gracious gifts of love
And that you believe every good thing comes from the Father above
So I too marvel at this life and all the Lord has carried us through
As I watch the fireflies tonight and they remind me so much of you.
